319th History
The 319th was deployed to Dau Tieng 8/10/68. The Detachment was attached to the 25th Infantry,
1st Infantry and 1st Air Cavalry during its deployment.
According to Tropical Lightning News, Volume 4, Number 21,
May 6, 1969: The 319th ASD had a strength of 16 members not counting Susie the detachment's mascot. The 319th was responsible
for controlling as many as 1,500 aircraft using the air traffic lanes at Dau Tiang run way. After controlling traffic for
9 months the 319th had a spotless accident record. (Article by SP 5 Rick Adams)
Marcus Wielosinsky "Ski" was awarded
the Silver Star for action taken during attack on Camp Rainier February 22-23 1969.
The 319th was brought to zero
strength and its records retired to a holding area some time around April 1970. With the relief of the 1st Infantry Division
Camp Rainier was divided between ARVN Forces, the 25th Infantry Division and the 1st Air Cavalry. The Army of Republic of
Vietnam took over the part with the runway. Dau Tieng Tower was dismantled and temporarily deployed to the 1st Cavalry area
and the detachment was attached to The 1st Cavalry. A short time later all equipment was returned to 165th Group Inventory
in Long Bein.
Note: "Mac" was lost for a short time during the move to 165th Group. He was escorting some of the equipment
by river. The barge was diverted to Manila. Imagine that! He had to sell his camera to have spending money!
SSG
Blount and I were the last members of the 319th. As acting detachment clerk I was the last to go. All fellow members were
assigned to other detachments.
This is only a partial roster compiled from my memory and other sources. I can not
